At the CVMM meeeting on Wednesday, February 18, 2009 Rod Landes gave a speech about the power of encouragement. He delivered an affirmation, speech and read the poem "Smile".  Below are the notes from his presentation:

In a world of negativity there are many opportunities to give encouragement to someone who needs it badly. It's not enough to say you encourage people you need to put actions to your words. With one minute we have the opportunity to share positive news, give a hug, make a phone call, write a card, or give someone a compliment.

Look for someone in your sphere of influence who needs a good word, and .... give it to them!! :)

Affirmation:

Just a Minute: "You only have a minute only 60 seconds in it. Forced upon you, can’t refuse it, didn’t seek it, didn’t choose it. But it is up to you to use it. You must suffer if you lose it. 1. What encourages you? Do the same to others!!
2. If you get a positive or encouraging thought, share it with others!
3. Could I do something to help? Notice peoples needs, How can I pray for you?
4. Write an encouraging note!
5. Celebrate others victories, great or small.
6. The power of presence. Just being there not saying a word.
7. Be committed , show up, on time!!
8. Use encouragement as an outreach!
9. Reach out and touch someone!! Handshake, hug, pat on the back, shoulder
10. Affirm positive direction in someone’s life. “A word of encouragement during a failure is worth more than an hour of praise after success”
11. Tell people how they have encouraged you!!

Smile

Smiling is infectious,
you catch it like the flu,
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too,

I passed around the corner,
and someone saw my grin-
When he smiled I realized,
I'd passed it on to him.

I thought about that smile,
then I realized it's worth,
A smile,
just like mine,
could travel the earth.

So if you feel a smile begin,
don't leave it undetected-
Let's start an epidemic quick
and get the world infected!
